Linda Kerber argued in the mid-1980s that after the American Revolution (1775–1783), an ideology of “republican motherhood” resulted in a surge of educational opportunities for women in the United States. Kerber maintained that the leaders of the new nation wanted women to be educated in order to raise politically virtuous sons. A virtuous citizenry was considered essential to the success of the country’s republican form of government; virtue was to be instilled not only by churches and schools, but by families, where the mother’s role was crucial. Thus, according to Kerber, motherhood became pivotal to the fate of the republic, providing justification for an unprecedented attention to female education.

Introduction of the “republican motherhood” thesis dramatically changed historiography. Prior to Kerber’s work, educational historians barely mentioned women and girls; Thomas Woody’s 1929 work is the notable exception. Examining newspaper advertisements for academies, Woody found that educational opportunities increased for both girls and boys around 1750. Pointing to “An Essay on Woman” (1753) as reflecting a shift in view, Woody also claimed that practical education for females had many advocates before the Revolution. Woody’s evidence challenges the notion that the Revolution changed attitudes regarding female education, although it may have accelerated earlier trends. Historians’ reliance on Kerber’s “republican motherhood” thesis may have obscured the presence of these trends, making it difficult to determine to what extent the Revolution really changed women’s lives.

    对应原句,prior to K's work, educational historians barely study women and girls,but TW's work is an exception。所以TW特别的地方时他examine 了education on girls.而不是TW关注了AR之前的girls。

    Woody's work was not an exception because of the time period on which it was focused. In other words, there may have been numerous works focused on that time period. What made Woody's exceptional was that it mentioned women and girls.

    1980年- Kerber发表。在Kerber发表以前,几乎无人发表关于girls的教育的文章。但Woody不同,1929年- Woody已经发表了关于girls的教育的文章。重点在于girls,而不是revolution,所以B选项是错的,E才是对的。

    注意读题!!
    题目重点在within the field of educational history,而定位句子的重点在Prior to Kerber's work,那么聚焦的点就在 educational historians barely mentioned women and girls这一处,而与Keber的work内容无关。
    B选项其实只是说Woddy聚焦了period before the American Revolution,其实是与Kerber’s work相比的exception,跟题目的讨论范畴无关了。换一个角度看,所有Prior to Kerber's work时期的作品应该全都是concentrated on the period before the American Revolution,所以W的也称不上exceptional。
    E选项才是真正在的讨论范畴里,而且也是正是原文句子W与”educational historians barely mentioned women and girls“所不同的特别的地方。

    according to还是先定位吧,凭着感觉选了B错了。B是错在文章没有原句来指明 说woody 的作品在关注于战前这方面就是exceptional的  而且B说的也很含糊 concentrate 在 period before American Revolution的什么呢?没有明确的说出来。再者文章已经举例了An Essay on Woman” (1753)as reflecting a shift in view。那么woody就不是唯一一个关注战前女性教育的人。所以这道题还是要定位去“Prior to Kerber’s work, educational historians barely mentioned women and girls; Thomas Woody’s 1929 work is the notable exception. Examining newspaper advertisements for academies, Woody found that educational opportunities increased for both girls and boys around 1750. ”选出的E吧,但是还是觉得文章里这块说的的确也不是很清楚

      这个可以通过前后衔接的内容比对 选出答案 tw的1929年作品是一个例外,但是这个例外是什么的例外呢?联系前后,前面说到在k之前很少书提到了女性的教育历史,后面说到则是简单论述了tw使用了一个方法去研究,但是丝毫没有对这个方法进行评价。因此这里可以看出这个的例外一定是tw在很少书说到女性教育内容的时候,出了一本说这方面的书。
