Naked mole rats form colonies of approximately twenty animals, each of which consists of a single
reproductive female and workers that defend her.
根据and的并列首先排除DE两个选项，因为and和前面的内容不平行；当前版本由 70**** 更新于2015-12-10 19:15:29 感谢由 70**** 对此题目的解答所做出的贡献。
AB选项修饰的都是animals，不符合原句的逻辑语义。C选项是一个正确的独立主格结构。D选项them指代不清，即使each of them没有问题，后面也应该是consists。E选项连词and连接两个完整的句子，那么谓语动词应该是consists而不是consisting.
the problem with choice A: It's basically impossible to understand in a single read-through. If your eyes see "... colonies of 20 animals, each of which ____...", then you will definitely think that "_____" is going to describe the animals, unless you are informed in advance of the intended meaning. In general, when GMAC has allowed which-modifiers to describe things of the form "noun + preposition + other noun", they've avoided this issue by making "other noun" incompatible with the modifier.
裸鼹鼠形成大约 20 只动物的群体，每个群体由一个生殖雌性和保护她的工人组成。
独立主格结构 要通过Meaning分辨出独立主格到底修饰的是什么。独立主格可以修饰句子里面的任一成分，要通过语义判断，不一定跟which一样必须是就近的。这个句子是每一个聚集地包括一个可以繁殖的女性和保护她的工人（字面意思 不要介意哈哈），而不是动物animals里面包含。each colony consisting S+修饰 主动语态包括
So in this case, we can eliminate (D) right away: “each… consist” is wrong, since “each” is singular. The other thing that jumps out at me is the word “them” in answer choices (B) and (D). The most recent plural noun is “animals” – but that doesn’t make any sense. “Each of the animals consisting of a single reproductive female and workers…”?? Nope. So (B) is gone, too. (A) has a nearly identical issue: “each of which” seems to refer back to “animals” as well, and that’s illogical. Our last two choices, (C) and (E), clarify the meaning by using the phrase “each colony.” The only difference between (C) and (E) is the word “and” -- and that doesn’t quite work in (E). We’d need a full clause after the “and” in this case: “and each colony consisted…” would be OK, but “consisting” is a participle (modifier) here, so we definitely don’t need the “and.” So our winner is (C). “each colony consisting” is just a modifier – and it makes perfect sense as a source of extra information for that initial clause, “Naked mole rats form colonies of approximately 20 animals…” from gmatclub--GMATNinJa

you can use a simpler understanding of "and" -- namely, it creates parallelism, and there aren't parallel structures in (e). i.e., there is nothing on the left that can possibly be regarded as parallel to "each colony consisting..." * in fact, the usage of "and" is inappropriate in the first place -- that is, it's nonsense to use "and" here. "X and Y" implies no necessary relationship between "X" and "Y". that isn't how this sentence actually works: instead, here, the second part of the sentence gives further description of the idea mentioned in the first. this is exactly why modifiers exist, so the sentence must be written with that information as a modifier, not as "and Y".
这句话的结构是这样的，rats form colonies，each colony consisting作为独立主格修饰前面这句话。

RON说： 在选项中有出现代词也有出现具体名词的，选择那个具体名词的 所以就可以排除剩下CE、 E选项的,and 是连接前后两个完整句才对，后面就要consists而不是consisting

which 和 them指代不清 and并列错误 C为正确独立主格，colony做subject
