句子结构:Often major economic shifts are so … as to be…

考点

so …that V.S. so … as to be/do的用法:so … that可以用作多个主语时,so前面的主语和that后面的主语可以不一样;

enough for sb. 对某人来说足够了

enough to do something 足够做某事

错误搭配:(X) enough + "that / so as to / so to / so that"。

(参考prep语法笔记2-94)enough to, so/such…that…, so/such…as to三者都表示结果,区别在于:enough to表示主观满足,在标准书面语中很少使用; so/such...that不用考虑逻辑主语问题; so/such...as to逻辑主语等于句子主语,即句子主语可以执行as to后面动词所表达的作用

选项分析

A. Correct. 主句为简单主系表结构

B. So...so that搭配错误(Incorrect Idiom)

C. able/unable to be done的结构wordy & awkward(C选项的从句把重心偷转到了"讨论economic shifts有没有

被识别这个能力",而合理的含义重心是"我们能否识别economic shifts")

D. enough偏向于主观判断,不符合逻辑语境;not to be distinguishable不如to be indistinguishable简洁

E. enough so that错误搭配(Incorrect Idiom)

参考例题1

OG10-171. In 1527 King Henry VIII sought to have his marriage to Queen Catherine annulled so as to marry Anne Boleyn.

(A) so as to marry

(B) and so could be married to

(C) to be married to

(D) so that he could marry

(E) in order that he would marry

Key: D

补充说明

关于so as to连写。So as to跟to并不是完全对等的!so as to里面有so这个连词,隔开前后,前面的统统是过程,后面统统是目的,而to没有连词,如果to do做状语,修饰的是最近谓语动词。

参考例题2:

738. The Emperor Augustus, it appears, commissioned an idealized sculptured portrait, the features of which are so unrealistic as to constitute what one scholar calls an "artificial face."

A. so unrealistic as to constitute

B. so unrealistic they constituted

C. so unrealistic that they have constituted

D. unrealistic enough so that they constitute

E. unrealistic enough so as to constitute

Key: A

解析:constitute的动作发出者是features很明确,所以可以用so…as to…

constitute可以做linking verb,也可以做transitive verb,在本题是linking verb.

(linking verb, not in progressive)

to be considered to be something

Failing to complete the work constitutes a breach of the employment contract.
The rise in crime constitutes a threat to society.

(linking verb, not in progressive)

if several people or things constitute something, they are the parts that form it

We must redefine what constitutes a family.

[T usually in passive] formal

to officially form a group or organization

The Federation was constituted in 1949.

OG的解释:

The verbs are and calls indicate that the sculpture is being viewed and judged in the present. Thus, neither the past tense verb constituted (in B) nor the present perfect verb have constituted (in C) is correct; both suggest that the statue's features once constituted an artificial face but no longer do so. Also, B would be better if that were inserted after so unrealistic, although the omission of that is not ungrammatical. Choices D and E use unidiomatic constructions with enough: unrealistic enough to constitute would be idiomatic, but the use of enough is imprecise and awkward in this context. Choice A, which uses the clear, concise, and idiomatic construction so unrealistic as to constitute, is best.

“So as to” vs. “so that” is a “red-herring” split here. In other words, either form is fine. The GMAT has gone back and forth on "so as to" (see Ch. 9 of our SC book), but you wouldn't want to eliminate on this basis alone.

In any case, the idiom “so as to” will generally have an intervening term: “So X as to Y.”

The award-winning pumpkin was so large as to require a special scale.

Note that the odd form of this idiom puts "require" in the present tense. Its size was large enough to cause this requirement.

We can also use “so that” with a more straightforward construction:

The award-winning pumpkin was so large that it required a special scale.

In the case of the posted problem, the difficulty with B has nothing to do with "so as to" vs. "so that"--it's the word “can.” We want to say that the changes actually are indistinguishable, not that they *can* be indistinguishable. This is a great example of the kind of meaning-based difference that can catch you if you are only focused on grammar rules. Beware!

Ron好像有说过so adj as to 是可以的,但是to do这里的动词必须是station,比如to be 这种就可以接受。但是so as to连在一起绝对不行

    选项分析:

    A选项:Correct. 本选项在语法和逻辑上均是正确的。

    B选项:想表达因果关系时,要么说so…that…,要么只说so,而不能用so…so that。

C选项:本选项在语法上没有问题。但在逻辑上,应将so gradual that改为so gradual as to be。这点考查了不定式和从句的区别。用之于本题,由于变化部分是状语,所以需判断主句的发生对状语事件的发生与否是否有直接影响。显然地,主句“主要经济变化是如此的逐渐”这个事件会直接影响“主要经济变化不能在最开始被检测出来”这个事件的发生与否。显然地,经济变化只要具有逐渐这个特点,则其就会具有难以被检测这个特点。因此,只能用不定式短语。

    D选项:enough表示“足以”,不能展现出主句和从句的因果关系。

    E选项:enough和so…that…是重复的,不能同时出现。
