主语 gains，谓语reflect，confidence有同谓语从句，主语是economy，谓语will avoid，recession有定语从句，主语为many，谓语是had feared。有and连词，从时态上可明显看出和will avoid谓语平行。

A 正确

B选项和原文的差异，首先考虑that同位语从句的正确性，发现confidence是可以由内容的，所以可以用同谓语从句。另外B选项没有了that同位语从句后，to avoid的功能就是主句的状语，且表目的了，那么rather to come也应该是主句的目的了，完全改变原文语义。可直接排除。

C选项有和B选项一样改变原文语义的错误，另外还有something原文没有出现过的概念，不优选，可直接排除。

D 和C选项有同样的改变原文语义的错误，另外recession many were fearing，定语从句没有引导词that或which，在传统语法中当先行词，也就是定语从句所修饰的名词或代词，在这个定语从句中充当宾语的时候，可以省略掉引导词that或者which，或者whom，所以在GMAT中正确的句子当中，这样做也不算错，但是为了表达严谨，在GMAT中最好还是加上引导词。

E选项that定语从句中出现被动，那么去掉从句直接用过去分词做定语修饰名词就可以了，也就是符合that be，which be尽量省略掉。当然，这个定语从句用了被动，逻辑表达也不是很好。

C ... ability to avoid..., and instead to come 实际上省略了一部分，完整的句子应该是... ability to avoid..., and instead the ability to come, 即 to come 是通过连词and与to avoid并列的、搭配ability的结构，显然and instead the ability to come不符合逻辑；（“不能改变题目语义”的解释不能说服我，如果题目的句子本身可能是错的，那其他选项中有可能存在更优的语义表达，除非能证明题目句子的语义显然更优）

D 应该用 but rather，存在but rather，but instead， and instead，但是不存在 and rather；were fearing 似乎很可疑，但是理解成“人们当时一直在担心”也是可以的，所以不是主要决策点。如果改成and instead，即变成 confidence (in the economy) to avoid... and (instead) to come... 我认为是可以的，and连接的两个to do都修饰confidence，但是如果改成connfidence to avoid... but to come... 就不符合逻辑了；

The past tense action in this case is the statement of the analysts. It's terribly unclear because the past tense is not actually used, except implicitly. 

A rewrite of this sentence would be: 

Analysts said that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year. 

It is clear by the "earlier in the year" that the fears occurred earlier than the analysts opinion. It is not the "followed by a gradual increase in business activity" clause that serves as the past tense, as you could get rid of that clause and the sentence would still be correct. 

As for the two subordinate clauses set off by "that", the OG is only indicating that one "contains" or includes the other: 

"that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year 

and instead come in for a . . ." 

This is a grammatically correct construction. 

I hope that's a bit helpful. 

On this particular question, I would have also questioned the past perfect tense, but would have doubled back and concluded answer choice (A) based on the incorrectness of the other answer choices.
