/but/ implies a contrast. if X but not Y has a contrast, then that would imply that X and Y usually go together. E.g., At the event, I saw Jake but not his wife. --> This sentence only makes sense if I would normally expect to see Jake's wife by his side. In this sentence, there's no reason to expect that acoustic signals would be accompanied by olfactory ones.

/instead of/ is generally restricted to nouns. /rather than/ can be used for essentially any part of speech at all. they moved stiffly rather than gracefully (adverbs) they moved to the left rather than to the right (prepositional phrases) the car was red rather than blue (adjectives)

Another perspective to tackle this SC: SUBJECT+VERB....+ by verbing.... indicates that the subject ITSELF is doing the action in "by verbing"; however, "by the noun of" (here by the use of....) indicates the subject is not invovled in this action, this action is done by somebody that does not appear in sentence. Since MWM itself IS USING...... eliminate A,B

this question can be queite easy if you use *parallelsim*. You see, MWM call.......and attract........ two parallel verbs, therefore, eliminate B,C,E; Choice A is bad——of course, its parallel structure is inferior to D's——since it indicates that "scientists" ATTRACT mates...nonsensical!!
