Like the great navigators who first sailed around the Earth, to gather information about its size and curvature of its surface, new observations have been made by astronomers that show with startling directness the large-scale geometry of the universe.
Like navigators who…, astronomers have made observations that…
1) 比较,like连接比较对象要对等,just as A do, so B do的固定搭配。
(A) like连接比较对象不对等,navigators与observations。
Earth;similar to
(E) just as with搭配错误。

Like the great navigators who first sailed around the Earth gathering information,=》分词gathering就近修饰Earth, 但避免了动作发出的歧义,加上ABCE有致命的错误,优选D

2:N,to gather information about its size and curvature of its surface,N;夹心修饰
2:gathering information about its size and curvature of the surface可以表示first sailed around the Earth的结果;也可以修饰astronomers
Ron解释C:..but that's clearly not the intended meaning. 'gathering information' is what the navigators did as they sailed around the earth. so, for the sentence to make sense, the modifier has to describe that whole action. by using a modifier that describes only 'Earth' the sentence implies that no such relationship exists—that the action is irrelevant. consider: I live in Los Angeles, where the 1984 Olympics were held. --> correct answer --> 'where the 1984 olympics were held' modifies 'LA'. --> most importantly—and (hopefully) quite obviously—the 1984 olympics have nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that i currently live in LA. in other words, the message of that sentence is: 1/ i live in LA. 2/ (UNRELATED BUT INTERESTING FACT) LA is where the '84 olympics were held. now, make the analogy: choice C implies NO relationship between the gathering of information and the navigators' actual circumnavigation of the globe. oops.

Like the great navigators (who first sailed around the Earth gathering information about its size and the curvature of its surface)who引导定语从句修饰navigators,分句的主干是 like navigators

hoho
Like navigators who……, astronomers have made observations that… A. like连接比较对象不对等,navigators与observations。 C. 用where引导定语从句改变了原句意思,原句并没有说明gather information是在Earth;similar to放在句首永远错,应该用Like替换。 D. 正确。 E. just as with搭配错误。
Like the great navigators要有可比性,所以排掉ABE。
